Jan Mankes (15 August 1889 - 23 April 1920) was a Dutch painter. He produced around 200 paintings, 100 drawings and 50 prints before sadly dying of tuberculosis at the young age of 30.

His poetic, beautiful, delicate work is characterized by immense restraint and stillness. Some people called him the silent painter... this silence is caused by balanced compositions and subdued use of colour. - Fen

Jan said, "I paint or rather wish to paint paintings, silent but singing, singing indeed by their silence".
